Winter County Championships – Bodmin 2-4th February

Did you know we are one of only a few counties to offer a Winter County Championship? Something to shout about and a great chance for competition early in the new year, without travelling out of county! There is still time to enter until 23rd January.

To enter, head over to LTA Tournament Software put in the tournament code COR-24-0001 or search for Cornwall Tournaments. Easiest of all visit the tennis Cornwall website and enter direct from there.

New selection criteria to represent the county at County cup

This year players who want to represent the county need to qualify for the honour by showing their support for the county, by playing in one of the county championship events or the ITF event at Newquay.

We hope this will strengthen the county championships and provide an opportunity to see prospective players in action, ensuring that selection is based on merit and desire. As well as creating strong cohesive and well practiced teams to invest in and send to compete around the country. County captains will be supported by the Tennis Cornwall committee in their team selection.

The full details of the new selection criteria can be viewed on the Tennis Cornwall website along with dates for all county cup events and team selection confirmation dates.

Coaching Conference

The Cornwall Coaching Conference was held at Heron Tennis Centre on the first weekend of the new year. I intended to drop in just to see how things were going and ended staying for the whole weekend! It was that good! Including a mental wellbeing workshop, nutrition for tennis, Red Ball master class and coaching for real life tennis or how to survive in the ‘jungle’ of competition!

In total twenty eight coaches attended including eleven from Cornwall and two all the way from Reading. Many thanks to Ann Williams from the Coaching Development Centre in Exeter for putting together such a great programme for us. Another top event happening here in Cornwall.

Visiting Clubs

Clubs are the backbone of tennis in Cornwall. I was reminded of this in the autumn when I was able to get out and about and visit eight of the county’s clubs. I was hugely impressed by their passion for the sport and the efforts they go to, in making tennis happen around the county. I hope to get out and visit more clubs in the coming weeks.

Whirlwind mini tour

We are up and running with our indoor coaching for all age groups, which is good to see. I am also very pleased that we were able to hold the price at £15 per session.

For Red, Orange and Green ball players there is the Whirlwind mini tour. A

series of competitions across Cornwall and Devon. A great chance to have a go

at competition. you can also follow the link to view the events and enter.

Tennis Cornwall committee update

A busy agenda for our January meeting. We had items on the forthcoming AGM; the new Tennis Cornwall strategy which will be launched at the AGM; agreement to hold another Tennis Awards evening in the autumn – Friday 27th September. Plus a get together with Tennis Club Chairs on Tuesday 26th March; LTA Awards actions; discussion about county kit and improving recognition for schools tennis.

Another busy meeting. Thanks to all of the committee, for their time and efforts, it feels like we are making some progress.

Enjoy your tennis,

Mike Thomas
