Cornwall Ladies Over 65s in tight match against Devon
On Tuesday 28th July, the over 65 Cornwall ladies team played Devon in a very warm bubble at The Heron Centre, Newquay.
Cornwall were delighted to have Sallyann Homer playing for them on this occasion and Susie Scorse was thrilled to pair up with Sallyann as first pair.
Against Devon’s number one pair Sallyann and Susie won in straight sets
6-4, 6-2 a great win and a great start for the home side.
Cornwall’s second pair, Jackie Rice and Jo Travis fought hard and had many tight games but found the Devon second pair too strong losing to them in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
At half way we were tied so all to play for. Sallyann and Susie then played Devon’s second pair and got off to an impressive start winning the first set 6-1.
In the second set concentration seemed to slip and the score was reversed with Devon winning 6-1, what a strange game tennis is!
A championship tiebreak decided the match and Cornwall took this easily winning 10-5.
In their second rubber, Jackie and Jo battled through some long rallies and tight games but despite their efforts lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Jackie’s dedication to county tennis certainly cannot be questioned as she was playing for the third day in a row! Having played against Bridgwater away on Sunday she then had to play not one, not two but three matches on Monday in the Penzance Open in order to be released to play this match.
Well done Jackie Rice!
With the match at 2 rubbers each, the number of sets would decide the winner. Set results were Devon 5 - Cornwall 4 so a win for Devon by just one set.
Well done to all players, it was a lovely friendly match and thank you to Sam at the Heron cafe for the super refreshments.
