The Cornwall Ladies Senior Tennis Team secured a highly creditable third-place finish at the prestigious LTA Summer County Cup.
They missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins on the final day of play.
Staged at the historic Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club in West Yorkshire, the grueling five-day event saw Cornwall compete in Group 5 against elite regional teams from across Great Britain.
Competing on world-class, fast-playing grass courts, the Cornwall squad demonstrated great physical endurance and mental fortitude through a schedule of nine doubles matches per day.
The battle for promotion to Group 4 came down to the absolute wire on the final afternoon of the tournament. In a cruel twist, Cornwall missed out on the win by a margin of just one single point. The definitive blow came during two close match tiebreaks, which went the way of the opposition at 10-8 and 12-10.
Scarlett Hetherington and Sofiia Hyrstenko won 14 out of their 15 matches across the week, while the youngest member of the squad, Millie Newton turned heads by showcasing exceptional skill, composure, and a remarkable ability to adapt instantly to the high-pressure grass-court environment.
“To come within a single point of promotion after five days of relentless competition is incredibly tough to take, but I could not be prouder of this team,” said Cornwall Team Captain Clare Hudson. “The fight, character, and ‘Cornish grit’ displayed by every single player - from our dominant lead pair to our youngest rising star - was exemplary. We proved we belong at this level, and this experience gives us an incredibly strong foundation to come back even stronger and secure promotion next summer.”
